1.) Can I tryout even if I don’t have any cheer experience?
Absolutely! Each year most of the girls who make the team have never been part of a
Cheer Team before. We love working with athletes who are new to the sport. If you would
like to get a jump on the 2011-12 Cheer & Song Tryouts, we highly encourage you to attend
our Pre-Tryout Prep Clinics Wednesday, April 13th & Thursday, April 14th 3:30-4:30pm. The
cost is minimal, just $10 each or $15 for both, but the experience gained and tips shared
are priceless.
2.) Do you have to know how to tumble to make the Cheer Team?
Absolutely not. Tumbling is not a mandatory requirement; however, it is does add to your
overall tryout score for the Cheer Tryout. Mira Costa Cheer provides several opportunities
for our athletes to work on their tumbling skills, no matter their current skill or experience
level. If you would like a recommendation for Tumbling Instruction, please contact us.
Tumbling is not a requirement or part of the overall score for the Song Tryout.
3.) How much does it cost to be MCHS Cheerleader/Songleader?
Although we host many fundraisers throughout the year, cheerleading can be very
expensive and vary based on team placement. Costs include uniforms, camps,
transportation, tumbling instruction, competitions, and travel.
4.) What is the time commitment? Can I do another team or activity at the same time?
MCHS Cheer & Song are year round sports at Mira Costa. Our teams begin practices in
May, immediately following tryouts, and continue until May of the following year. All squads
support Football and Girls' Volleyball in the Fall, and Boys’ & Girls’ Basketball in the
Winter. We also support Boys' Volleyball in the Spring. Our teams also participate in
local, regional, and national Cheer Competitions in the Winter and Spring. If a team
member wants to participate in another activity or sports program, participation cannot
negatively impact their responsibilities to the MCHS Spirit Program.
5.) Is there practice over the summer? Will I be able to go on vacation with my family?
Summer practices and camps are mandatory. This is when you will learn all of the
necessary game material for the bulk of the year. Please check the “Important Dates”
section of the Tryout Packet to ensure there are no potential conflicts. There will be two
extended breaks during the summer. Vacations and trips should be scheduled during
these times.
6.) I just got a new piercing. Do I really have to take it out?
Sorry, but yes, you do. We do not allow jewelry of any kind at any practice, game,
performance, or event. It must be removed. Taping over piercings is not an option.
7.) I really want to tryout for the Spirit Program, but I have a scheduling conflict during
that week and I cannot change it. What should I do?
If you are unable to attend the Mandatory Tryout Clinics and Tryout Day due to an
unavoidable scheduling conflict, with approval of the coaching staff, you may be able to
submit a Video Audition. Please email Coach Jay Watson at jwatson@mchspepsquad.
com for approval and submission requirements. Please be advised that this is the only
exception made. You must be available to attend all practice and camp dates listed in the
Tryout Out Packet in order to make the squad.
8.) What if I have a question that has not been answered on the website or in the Tryout
Packet?
Please feel free to email jwatson@mchspepsquad.com. We will be happy to answer any
question you may have.
